Research-group Organic Trace Analysis

The focus of this research group is the development and application of analytical techniques for organic trace analysis based on standard and hyphenated chromatographic techniques. The great complexity of environmental and also technical samples is addressed by the development of new and improvement of existing schemes for sample preparation, and more recently, by the development and use of multi-dimensional separation techniques. To achieve this all standard and advanced gas and liquid chromatographic techniques exist in the research group with very recent additions of comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography with a hybrid ion trap/time of flight mass spectrometric detector (2D-HPLC/IT-TOF-MS) and of a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatographic system with flame ionization and mass spectrometric detection (GC×GC/FID/MS).

Recent research topics 

  • Speciation analysis of organic germanium and selenium compounds used as food additives and pharmaceutical compounds
  • Investigation of qualitative and quantitative aspects of comprehensive two-dimensional chromatography
  • Development of silica-based monolithic materials for chromatography and sample preparation
  • ‘Green’ (= environmentally friendly) sample preparation techniques for extraction and preconcentration of trace organic analytes
  • Development and application of analytical methods for organic materials in artwork

  • Shimadzu Prominence two-dimensional HPLC with UV/Vis detection (DAD) and ion-trap-time of flight-mass spectrometry (IT-TOF-MS)
  • Various gas chromatographs (Hewlett Packard 5890 II and 6890) with all types of standard detectors (FID, ECD, NPD)
  • Gas chromatography with atomic emission detection (GC-AED, Agilent 7890/JAS 2350A) with CombiPAL autosampler with Headspace option, and two instruments Hewlett-Packard 5890 II with Hewlett-Packard 5921A AEDs
  • Thermo Ultra Trace GC/MS system
  • Shimadzu QP2010 Ultra GC/MS System with CombiPAL autosampler and large volume injection option and cryogenic modulator for two-dimensional comprehensive chromatography (Zoex)
