Gastvortrag Paulo Tavares: "RADIO AS SPATIAL PRACTICE"

In 2007, more than 750 illegal radio stations were closed down in Sao Paulo by the Federal Police.  Among those informal networks of media production/distribution, there were several radio stations owned by the Bolivian community, the largest immigration movement to Sao Paulo in recent years. The inventive landscape of the immigrants include not only the appropriation of urban plazas and the creation of informal markets in the city, but the systematic intervention on the semiotic landscape created by the media, without - before and beyond - state or corporate controlled networks. Processes of (re)-territorialization are often rooted on autonomous practices and are necessarily double layered - at the same time occupying the “invisible” spaces of mediated subjectivity and the materiality of everyday life. The counter-state use of media technologies experienced by disenfranchised communities is our point of departure to engage in a critical perspective of contemporary spatial practices vis-à-vis the creation of common spaces and autonomous territories.
